Understanding PC-12 & What it Means for Your Fleet

The heavy-duty trucking industry is preparing for the next evolution in engine lubrication with the introduction of PC-12, the development program for a new generation of diesel engine oil standards scheduled to launch in January 2027. As engine technology advances and emissions requirements become more stringent, these updated oil specifications will help ensure engines continue to perform efficiently, reliably, and with greater durability.

Why Are New Engine Oils Needed?

Heavy-duty engines continue to evolve as manufacturers work to improve fuel efficiency, reduce emissions, and maintain durability under increasingly demanding operating conditions. Newer engine designs may operate at higher temperatures, incorporate advanced emissions-control systems, and require lubricants capable of delivering reliable protection under greater stress.

API CL-4 and API FB-4 oils are designed to support these changing requirements. The new categories are expected to provide improvements in areas such as:

  • Oxidation resistance
  • Engine wear protection
  • Piston cleanliness
  • High-temperature performance
  • Emissions-system compatibility
  • Fuel-efficiency support

Understanding the Difference Between CL-4 and FB-4

Although both categories are part of the PC-12 transition, they are intended for different applications.

API CL-4 will replace API CK-4 as the primary category for a broad range of heavy-duty diesel engines. CL-4 oils are expected to be backward-compatible, allowing approved products to be used in many newer and existing engines that currently require CK-4 oils.

API FB-4 will build upon the current FA-4 category. These lower-viscosity oils are primarily intended for newer engine platforms designed to take advantage of their fuel-efficiency benefits. FB-4 oils may not be appropriate for every engine, particularly older equipment, so fleets should always follow the engine manufacturer’s lubricant recommendations.

How Can Fleet Managers Prepare?

Fleets do not need to make immediate changes, but now is a good time to review current lubricant requirements and prepare for the transition. Fleet managers should identify the engine models in their operation, confirm the required oil categories and viscosity grades, and consider how the new specifications may affect purchasing, inventory and maintenance practices. This is especially important for mixed fleets, where different vehicles may require different products.
